MEP Internship

Introduction

Musgrove is a Consulting company. They do heating/cooling, electrical, and plumbing design for buildings or building complexes. As an intern there, I would support the Mechanical and Plumbing designers with their various projects. I would do this by:

• Setting up project files in AutoCAD and REVIT
• Doing heating / cooling load calculations
• Doing plumbing load calculations

Through an interesting series of events, I also became the lead software developer at Musgrove Engineering P.A. I helped manage libraries, create batch scripts, and I created custom REVIT plugin tool to automate drafting processes and improve efficiency.

Project File Setup

I set-up REVIT and AutoCAD files to be linked to models of other disciplines in accordance with Musgrove standard drafting principles.

Heating / Cooling Load Calcs

In accordance with applicable building codes, ASHRAE standards, guidelines, and design conditions, I would determine the following for each room of a building

• Max heating load (winter)
• Max cooling load (summer)
• Outside Air Requirements
• Exhaust / Ventilation Requirements

Plumbing Load Calcs

I determined the cold water, hot water, sanitary waste, and ventilation fixture unit demand for the main and each branch of the plumbing design for buildings. Then, in accordance with the UPC, I sized the piping throughout the building.

Software Developer

Unexpectedly, due to my background in coding (mostly hobbyist), I became a software developer at Musgrove. I created

• Custom REVIT plugin to enhance drafting quality and speed
• Proprietary list of REVIT parameters and REVIT schedules
